Why should I microchip my pet?
In one study, less than 50% of lost dogs and 20% of lost cats had any identification (tags, microchip) when they went missing. (1) In a recent study of 53 U.S. animal shelters, only 1.8% of stray cats and 21.9% of stray dogs were able to be reunited with their owners. (2) In the same study, 38.5% of stray cats with registered microchips were reunited – OVER 20 TIMES MORE, and 52.2% of stray dogs with registered microchips were reunited – OVER 2.5 TIMES MORE. The major reason for failing to reunite a lost pet with its owner is because of pets that are unidentifiable. Microchipping offers you as the pet owner the only truly permanent method of identifying your pet and linking the animal back to you. If you want to improve your pet's chances of getting home in a lost-pet emergency, microchipping is your best option.
Frequently Asked Questions
My dog always has a collar and tags (a tattoo). Why do I need to microchip him?
Collars and tags may be removed or get lost, and tattooing can become illegible over time. Microchipping is the only truly permanent method of identifying your cat or dog.
I have a cat – should I microchip her?
Cats are naturally curious and unpredictable. In the event that they are drawn away from the safety of their home; you need to give them the best chance of getting home safely. In the event that your cat does get lost, a microchip registered with 24PetWatch is your cat's best chance of getting home.
Does microchipping hurt the animal?
Animal microchips are about the size of a grain of rice and are typically implanted just beneath the skin between the shoulder blades by a veterinarian or trained member of an animal welfare organization. The process is similar to a vaccination, and most animals do not react when the microchip is implanted. Once implanted, the microchip remains just beneath the skin for the rest of the animal's lifetime, a permanent form of identification.
How much does it cost to microchip my pet?
Microchipping your pet, including registration with 24PetWatch, costs only $12.
