SHELBY SHELTER CELEBRATES SECOND SPAY/NEUTER PROGRAM ANNIVERSARY
An anniversary is just around the corner for The Shelbyville-Shelby County Animal Shelter. Early in 2008, the shelter formed a working relationship with Pets Alive Nonprofit Spay/Neuter Clinic, and at that time spay or neuter for every adopted shelter animal became mandatory. A customer with a newly adopted animal may take the pet to the vet of his or her choosing or come back on a selected day for transport to Pets Alive. If they choose the Pets Alive monthly program, the altering of the animal is included in the adoption fee. The Shelbyville-Shelby County Animal Shelter is now generating impressive numbers for this service--not only for the shelter animals but also for the pets of the general public.

PETS ALIVE ANNOUNCES 6,699 SPAY/NEUTER SURGERIES IN 2009
“It was particularly gratifying to hear Mayor Kruzan and BACC Director Laurie Ringquist recognize Pets Alive role at the ceremony marking the shelter’s graduation from the Rescue Waggin’ program,” said Executive Director James McNamara. McNamara credited the generosity of donors and a dedicated staff for the volume of surgeries the clinic is able to do. “The actual cost of each of these surgeries was subsidized by our donors,” McNamara said. “Fee revenue only accounts for about half of those costs. And then it takes a talented, caring staff to make it happen.”
