Flea, Tick, and Heartworm Preventive
 Flea and Tick Prevention
Fleas can cause severe damage allergic skin reactions and anemia in pets and can transmit tapeworms. Fleas are easily spread between humans and animals.
Ticks are most commonly located in wooded areas. Ticks can transmit Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever; they can cause paralysis as well as painful skin lesions. Maintain pet on flea and tick control during flea and tick season at a minimum. Fleas are killed outside only through a hard freeze and can live year round inside the home. Our vets recommend year round application.

Heartworm Prevention
Test at six months unless preventive (Heartgard or Interceptor) was started at three months, in which caste test at one year. Test annually even if on preventive. Maintain administration of preventive year round. Heartworms are a type of worm that develop in the hearts of dogs transmitted by mosquitoes. Heartworms are common in this part of Indiana. Left undetected, they cause the heart to enlarge and eventually lead to an agonizing death due to congestive heart failure.
Heartworm prevention products are only available to clients who have been tested for heartworm either during surgery or at our vaccination clinic. Pets Alive is a member of the American Heartworm Society,
